Integrated Care Track - Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship | Children's National Hospital

We are excited to offer a specialized track that spans two years to support the development of child and adolescent psychiatrists as experts in various integrated care models.

While we are experiencing a youth mental health care crisis, unfortunately, there is a shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists, with extensive waitlists for youth to be seen. Pediatricians are now managing more mental health concerns with limited resources and access to psychiatrists. This is leading to an increase in career opportunities for child and adolescent psychiatrists who are comfortable with working within an integrated care model.

This track aims to provide fellows with the skills to be not only well-rounded child and adolescent psychiatrists, but also physicians skilled in working collaboratively with pediatricians in various clinical models. Similar to our main program, fellows in this track will meet all the Residency Review Committee requirements in child in adolescent psychiatry.

Year 1

Fellows will complete the core rotations as noted in the main program; however, the subspecialty block will integrate the following clinical experiences:

Introduction to various models of integrated care
- Phone consultation to pediatricians
- Outpatient Psychiatry Consultation Clinic: Patients will be seen in the outpatient psychiatric department referred from pediatricians. Fellows liaise with the pediatrician and provide recommendations for mental health care
- Embedded in primary care consultation model
Introduction to the general structure of primary care clinics and a focus on understanding the systems of care

Year 2

Fellows will complete the core subspeciality rotations as noted in the main program; however, with a modified clinical and educational experience that includes the following:

Practical experience as a psychiatrist embedded in primary care settings
Development and supervision as a teacher for pediatricians
Engagement in either advocacy or research around integrated care
Priority for additional electives focused on integrated care, such as:
- NIH Consultation liaison
- Virginia mental health access program
- Pediatric subspeciality integrated care sites
- Advocacy and/or educational elective with Children’s National Pediatric Health Network
- Additional consultation clinic
Weekly supervision with an integrated care expert

Outpatient Clinic Schedule

2 half days: General outpatient psychiatry clinic days
1 half day: General new patient evaluations and consultation clinic with a higher ratio of consultations
1 half day: Embedded in a primary care clinic
